How many ways to not play winning volleyball
1.) Have seven attack errors and hit .029 (8-7/34= .029). 2.) Have three service errors (two on 1st serves and one on 2nd serve) and serve .105 to zone (5-3/19), Fisher, McMains (at least she did not have a service error - YET), Herr, and Herron combined to not hit a single called zone and had all three errors. 3.) Put a freshman on the floor who will not punch at a high tight set and then 1 minute and 23 seconds later passes a second ball, set point no less, too low and too tight to the net for anyone to get it up. 4.) Put a freshman on the floor who will not take ONE SINGLE STEP to her right to dig a ball. 5.) Pass a ball off the rafter and NO PLAYER is looking to play the ball that almost hits M. Herr on top of the head. 6.) Have one heck of an incredible comeback to tie the score at 17 all and pull every single ounce of momentum to our side of the court, and then score only one more single lonely point and give every single ounce of momentum back to Frontier. Who the heck saw us winning 50 of the next 73 points? 7.) A stupid coach who is too old to hold a squat that long. M. McMains is young enough but not willing to do that - YET! We survived graduating the winningest class in volleyball history a year ago. Now, we will have to do it again. How many schools in the state of Indiana experience that two years in a row? We will have to do just that. And I want to go on record to say. "We will do just fine afterward. "
Might be a little harder than this year because we have three really solid seniors and possibly two of the best seven volleyball players to ever play at Carroll leaving. But we are going to be good next year. Lets take one single example of why I think this. Take a moment to look at the numbers M. McMains is putting up. She is hitting 80-32/242=.198 with 80 kills, has 54 total blocks and serving 91.8% to zone with 36 aces and 16 errors or a 2.25:1 ace-to-error ratio. She has scored 143.5 points (kills+aces+blocks [block assists count as half a point]). If these numbers were by a senior, I would be happy enough. By a freshmen? Happy! Happy! Happy!! Uniforms just aren’t the same. When back in our day, it was UNACCEPTABLE to wear anything but knee high socks.
When your knees are bruise-free & you wonder what’s wrong. After 15 years of never seeing a patch of normal unbruised/burnt/scabbed skin on my knees, it is a welcome introduction. “Nice to meet you, normal human knees!” Why is everyone here so short? For the first time you feel a little “out of place” when you realize that not everyone in the world is over 6-foot & you have a mini height identity crisis. When you finally grasp just how much you owe your parents. Waking up at 3am to drive you to your tournaments every weekend and then sitting in a gym for 36 hours watching you play is a lot more work than I ever gave them credit for. Thanks, Mom & Dad!! When you actually have to learn how to braid your own hair. Every team had that one girl who you scheduled your hair braiding appointment with before your first match of the day. As a coach, the first time you say something to your girls that one of your coaches always said to you and you can’t believe those words actually just came out of your mouth. I guess it really is all engrained in my brain forever! The heartache of knowing you'll never get to celebrate a championship point ever again. I’d give anything to relive that feeling on the court just one more time. Too bad it’s not socially appropriate to jump, scream, fall to your knees, and cry tears of elation when you get a good parking spot… Next Seven
When you put on a pair of spandex after 5 years and wonder HOW you wore these for 25% of your life. I swear, they used to be so comfortable. FYI, it’s actually NOT ok to publicly pick a wedgie. When “carb-loading” turns into “carb-free.” Because apparently a Friday isn’t a good enough reason to carb-load?? When you go out and think you can play like you're still a collegiate athlete. You end up not being able to get out of bed for two weeks and you look like one giant bruise. My body just cannot do it anymore… time to accept it & move on. When you’re coaching and your girls take an entire practice to organize their warm up routine and perfect their cheers. There’s just no way we put this much energy into this when I played…right? Missing that team family bond. There’s just nothing like it outside of the sports world. I will always be missing those 12 crazy sisters you once called your teammates. The moment you remember this is rec volleyball and not the National Championship. Once I realized I could get my volleyball fix by joining a rec team I was the first one to sign up but it turns out I can only go 1000% or not at all. There is just no in between! Watching kneepads virtually disappear. What is this 1/4-inch piece of foam nonsense? Come on, who remembers the 3-inch bubble pads?! I know some of our graduated players keep up with the team through the website. This is for them. Also, S. Fisher is down to a dozen days of matches left in her volleyball career. G. Filbrun and M. Herr have one more club season left and then it is off to college volleyball. Check out the list by Jami-Leigh Newell.
When you realize it’s no longer acceptable to publicly live in spandex. After wearing spandex 24/7 for over a decade, I realized that most people actually don’t consider them real pants after the first time I felt the stares of judgment & disapproval. When you're now the coach and you finally understand every single thing your coaches have ever said to you. It’s a rude awakening discovering why my coach was so frustrated with us all the time. It just can’t be that hard to say “I GOT IT” or get your serve IN the court, can it?! [How I relate to that one.] Knowing that you’ll never have to INVOLUTARILY participate in two-a-day preseasons ever again.Ahhhhh…sweet, sweet bliss. When you can actually keep a manicure intact for more than two days! Who knew they had the potential to last this long?! You reflexively yell “MINE” when someone tosses something in your general direction. Sorry, it’s a habit! When you would KILL to have just one more “Christmas in August.” You mean I don’t get huge shipments of clothing and new gear like ankle braces and shoes every season anymore?! What am I supposed to wear all fall? You still cringe every time you see someone kick a volleyball. It’s just unnecessary & it hurt Seven more tomorrow. Could that be somewhere close to a state record by Fairfield? G. Filbrun was aced 4 times and passed 1.0. S, Fisher aced 5 times and passed 1.07. She was aced 4 times on 4 receptions in the 3rd set to pass zero. M. Herr aced EIGHT times and passed .833. The second set, which we won, we were aced once.
Like: M. McMains hitting .165. She is right there with the Miller girls from a year ago.
Don't Like: M. Herr hitting .272. Just too many easy, safe roll shots. She should be hitting near .290 or even .300. Like: P. Jones hitting .172. She is right there with the Miller girls from a year ago and 50 pts better than E. Eurit. Don't Like: Serve receive in Muncie. We were exposed in the two man receive. First set Fairfield aced us 9 times. M. McMains who is tied as the 8th best freshmen server in the state with 26 aces.
P. Jones who is tied as the 26th best freshmen server in the state even after missing five matches. M. Herr who is 4th in the conference in hitting at .262 and leads the conference in kills at 197. G. Filbrun who is 6th in the conference in hitting at .209 and is 7th in the conference in kills with 90. G. Filbrun who is 6th in the conference in assists with 153. P. Jones who is 7th in the conference in assists with 141. M. Herr who leads the conference in aces with 44. G. Filbrun who is 2nd in the conference in aces with 38. M. McMains who is 6th in the conference in aces with 26. M. Moore who is 2nd in the conference in blocks with 51. M. Herr who is 3rd in the conference in blocks with 49. M. McMains who is 6th in the conference in blocks with 37. K. Hammond who is 9th in the conference in blocks with 24. S. Fisher who is 3rd in the conference in digs with 226. M. Herr who is 5th in the conference in digs with 162. G. Filbrun who is 6th in the conference in digs with 161. |
