I have never charted both teams off of film, let alone a long 5 setter. Probably will not do that again for a while. That was time consuming to the point of stupidity. They do not pay me enough to spend that much time combing through film.
Here are some interesting things I have gleaned after stating and charting my way through five sets. As we are currently playing, we will be challenged more than we should to win the conference and, I see few ways that we win our sectional. If our goal is just to win games, there is no doubt that we can do that. However, ever since these seniors and I came together, the goal was more than just win games. We will play one more tournament at Jay County, have our conference tournament, and lastly sectional in one month and three days. We are currently not playing well enough to win any three of those events. Why is that?
These seniors and juniors (along with L. Eller) have achieved a great deal. By Carroll volleyball standards, an unbelievable level of play. However, in the big picture, they have achieved absolutely nothing! Have they hung a number? Nope. They have won one tournament only because Frontier got beat in pool play. They laid an egg in the HHC tournament a year ago. They laid another egg a week and half ago. I can count on one hand the number of wins we have against "good" teams. Sometimes it is physical, our hitters are capable of hitting walls more often than the floor. Our blockers are like a screen door blocking the wind. Sometimes it is mental. We have a great passer who Hoovers up 99% of the balls around her who suddenly just stops and expects some someone else to get a ball that she normally runs right to. We have hitters that get so nervous that they slow their arms down and loop nice sets 10 feet out of bounds. How about the kid who is so worried about her individual numbers that when she is not hitting, well nothing else matters.
Saturday, we get the chance to win a tournament, beat a team that has one loss, and beat a 2nd team with one loss that is ranked number one! Almost 300 miles due west of Flora, hard on the Mississippi River is Quincy, Illinois. Since 1860, Quincy University, a Catholic liberal arts university of 1,200 students, has been providing educational and athletic opportunities to young men and women.
Last week, Lauren Worl, decided the five hour drive to Quincy was right for her and gave her verbal commitment to Coach Robert Crank to attend and play volleyball for the Hawks. Quincy recruits Illinois, Missouri, and Wisconsin hard. Lauren will join a returning player from Arizona and Texas as players from outside the tri-state region. Quincy, a one time volleyball power, is attempting to regain its standing in the volleyball world. The Hawks are currently 4-4 following up on a 13-18 season in 2015. They have had only one winning season in the past eight. Quincy will graduate three girls, a 6'0 MH, a 5'11 LSH, and a 5'10 LSH, in 2017. Quincy University is also a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference with St. Joe where sister Bailey plays for the Pumas. North White would have remained undefeated if not for Megan's efforts. No way they could have been prepared for that. They scouted us vrs. Frontier but Megan hit a negative number. Then in our two set loss in the championship game, she wasn't much better at .095. I know when she plays faster, she is capable of hitting the .400 she did Tuesday night. Then to pass 2.77 on 11 balls and block as well as she did, well it all adds up to special evening as Megan ends up with a triple double for the night.
And boy did we need it. Our two LSH'ers combined to hit 15-15. For comparison sake, Megan was 16-2/35= .400. Meghan Miller also played well on offense at 9-3/25= .240, but it was how she hit that stands out. Her last three kills were all really aggressive. We used to call those "message shots" back in the day when Coach Emili played for us in club. I was so mad at our effort, especially in defense, at times, I did not really get to enjoy Grace setting a new school record with 45 assists. Also want to recognize our serve receive. E. Eurit passed 2.375, Megan Herr passed 2.72 (!!), Meghan Miller passed 2.25, S. FIsher passed 2.33, and L. Worl passed 1.85, which seems low but is really pretty good! Just not compared to her teammates as they were off the chart. Passing like that gets you places - like 9-1. |
