Madison is the next Carroll volleyball grad to speak about her experiences. I must tell you that as a freshmen, I had little idea where we were going to to play Mad-Woman. She passed in junior high, but wasn't consistent enough as a passer with L. Eller, E. Eurit and others around. Over the next couple of years she continued to grow, was getting really strong in the weight program, and developed a fast arm. Bingo, we had a left side hitter. By the time she was a senior, she was a weapon. I consider Madison one of the most improved players I have ever coached over four years. Madison received a nice offer to play volleyball at Ancilla College outside of Plymouth but elected to study nursing at IUK.

1.) We had our best evening of the summer going 5-1. I thought the competition was down a little bit, but 5-1 is still 5-1.
2.) Increasingly, it appears that we are going to have to rely on the seniors to serve receive. As I wrote a week or two ago, the freshmen need a lot of reps. Last night S. Fisher passed 1.92. M. Herr passed 2.06. G. Filbrun passed 2.30. We should recognize M. Hamm for passing 1.8 and J. Seward for passing 2.0. Neither had a ton of balls, but both got the job done when the ball was in their zone or seam. 3.) For the summer, G. Filbrun and P. Jones have combined for 33 aces and one missed serve. Wow! They are both way over .600 to zone. In general, it appears that we are going to be a good serving team, but these two girls our off the charts. 4.) We might have to think about how/where to use M. McMains on offense. She is a pretty good hitter and easily led us last night hitting .388 (the other two girls who hit middle were M. Herr who hit .050 and M. Moore hit .173). We certainly do not want to over react to one night of stats; however, she has hit well a couple times this summer, and I know from club she can get hot. When we played Kokomo in our last match and moved Makayla to the opposite, she was set only once. She was hitting .411 as we entered that final match and was set once? Hmmmm.... Carroll Volleyball is like a second family to me. I had never felt so close to a group of girls in my entire life, and I am so very thankful for each and everyone of them. From the traditional Dunes runs to watching Bridesmaids every year during two-a-days to ice cream after games, and to getting up at 5 a.m. to run bleachers because we went five sets with Frontier. It was demanding and strenuous, but there is not a single moment I would have traded (okay not true, if I could’ve not torn my ACL that would’ve been nice haha). We were probably the most obnoxious team at Carroll, but who cares we were good and having fun. There was no greater feeling than someone making some amazing play and getting to celebrate by screaming so hard that everything would go black and stomping the ground so hard that my knees hurt the next day. We turned a program that was failing in to something very special. It was and is an honor to be part of Carroll Volleyball, and the bond you will make with the girls around you is something that is lifelong. It means something to be part of that circle, to be considered a ‘brother’ (if you don’t know yet, you will understand what that means). I have memories that will last me a lifetime from my years of Carroll Volleyball, and I am so very grateful for them all. I could go on and on and on about how much this team meant/means to me, but Coach Crum said 100 words and I am way past my limit already! I just encourage each and every one of you to work hard and don’t be shy. Wear the name on your jersey proudly and play for the girls on your left and right. Also remember that if you feel like Coach is picking on you, he probably is. He only yells because he cares and he sees potential in you that you don’t see yourself. You are playing for a coach who's volleyball IQ is probably bigger than his actual IQ ;) (kidding!) so trust the system and listen to him even when he’s being outrageous. Work hard and give 110% everyday because it’s all over before you know it.
I am asking every graduate of our program to write a note to the current girls. It could be a general impression (much like our first note), a specific incident, a positive note or even something negative. Ninety-nine point nine percent of the words and point-of-view expressed at this website are mine. I thought it interesting to hear from the girls. Let them speak to our current team. Passing the torch so to speak. It became especially important in light of how young this team is with all the freshmen.
Originally, I was going to have one of our current players read these when they came in to the team. After reading the first one, I thought parents might also learn and appreciate this view of Carroll Volleyball. One of the things we teach is how to sequence a play. The title is what our players should be looking at and making decisions on what might happen, what can not happen, and how we should react. We have a lot a freshmen who do not have a ton of experience sequencing plays. Let walk through this process.
Hitting and Serving numbers as of Frontier and updated as we play
Hitting M. Moore: 39-26/125= .104 G. Filbrun: 59-37/163= .134 P. Jones: 24-28/127= (-.031) M. McMains: 33-18/105= .142 J. Seward: 5-8/20= (-.150) S. Fisher: 2-5/14= (-.214) K. After two scrimmages, Monday without one all-state level player and Wednesday without both of our all-state level players, here are some early observations,
1.) In the short term, the freshmen are not going to contribute in the serve receive game. The wild card might be P. Jones. Prior to her back injury, she was passing 1.7's plus in club play. As the back injury progressed, her passing numbers declined. As of tonight, we have M. Herr, S. Fisher, and G. Filbrun as primary passers. I would love four. Paige? I have been thinking about doing this for years. We try to give kids a chance to experience a little bit of the Indiana State Fair. A chance to experience the Indiana Dunes National Park. The opportunity to see and play in and along Lake Michigan at Big Claire's and New Buffalo. Lets not forget about local ice cream stands everywhere we find them.
However, none of those are super educational. I mean they are but not exactly. Two things kept rolling around in the back of my mind. Several of our players have only seen Chicago from across the lake at Big Claire's. I have been trying to decide if I wanted to show them Chicago. To do that I needed something super educational to justify the time and expense of going. A life time ago, I was super immersed in the Holocaust. Allow me to explain. We started Thursday night with 13 players. The freshmen turned out in big numbers as nearly half our team has never taken a high school class. We are young, no denying that, but our incoming freshmen had a great 8th grade season for Carroll tasting defeat only three times and an equally solid club season specializing in finishing as a tournament runner up. Not champions, but usually we would have a 3-1 or 4-1 day.
We will build around two All-Conference selections in M. Herr and G. Filbrun. They have both had good club seasons with a lot of winning being done following a rough start way back in early February at the Dunes (great competition). Our other senior, S. Fisher, is off to a good start as you will see in a moment. In between, our sophomores and juniors will be asked to replace some of the point production and defense that the most successful class in Carroll volleyball history provided. If you know anything about the things I value on a volleyball court, it is effort, passing, serving, and respect your teammates. These passing numbers reflect everything collected for the summer. G. Filbrun: 464/254= 1.82 S. Fisher: 721/379= 1.90 K. Hammond: 71/57= 1.24 M. Herr: 248/132= 1.87 J. Herron: 67/73= 0.917 P. Jones: 232/169= 1.37 M. McGill: 121/89= 1.35 M. McMains: 154/134= 1.14 M. Moore: 164/136= 1.20 J. Seward: 206/172= 1.19 M. Viney: 108/95= 1.13 A. Gaylor: 32/35= 0.914 M. Worl: 16/17= 0.94 H. Kaufmann: 8/22= 0.363 B. Oyler: 13/14= 0.928 M. Ashby: 6/13= 0.461 K. Brumett: 34/25= 1.36 A. May= 37/22= 1.68 |
