L. Worl is 42nd in hitting percent at .332. Lauren is swinging so much better than six weeks ago. Getting her arms back on her approach (few John Wayne's) and elbow is nice and high. Nice work Lauren. Meghan Miller would be 65th at .305, but she does not have enough swings in to qualify. What a heavy ball she hits. L. Eller is 54th in digs at 285. We have three players in the top 100 in serving aces. E. Eurit is 56th with 49 aces (her ace to error ratio of 4.9:1 is top ten), M. Herr is 76th with 46 aces (ace to error ratio is 2.4:1), and at 91st is G. Filbrun with 44 aces (2.75:1).
We are winning so many matches in three (a great thing!) that we are not getting the numbers needed for our kids to rank high with the state leaders. That is okay. It is a team sport and 17 wins is the most important number. Here is what we show as of 9/30.

16-1. We have set a school record for wins. Won the Tri-County tournament. However, we have not hung a number. And the line up as constructed might not do so. Frontier is a huge hurdle for conference. Heck, we have to play Tri-Central again. Covington looms in sectional. I think there is more to be pulled from this team. So Boom! Blow it up and see what we have. A huge gamble, but these kids deserve to a chance to hang numbers and maybe a lot more.
The Warriors are 13-8. The computers have us ranked 50th in the state. Winamac is 146th. Winamac lacks a quality win with Merrillville at 182 their best. While there is no shame in losing to Morgan Township at 53 or to a powerful Valpo team at number 3, Winamac has lost to some bad teams most recently Oregon Davis at 261. Before we get to haughty, we are not much different. Our Strength of Schedule is actually worse than theirs.
On offense they spread the ball around. They have a handful of kids with decent kill numbers, but they also have too many errors. They best hitter is #12 Jacobs, who has 139 kills but only hits .200 due to 63 errors. They also serve the ball decently with their setter, #24 - Jones their best with a 1.77:1 ace to error ration and Jacobs right behind her at 1.66:1. They appear they run a 5-1 offense with #24. They struggle tremendously in serve receive. Again, Jacobs is best and she gets aced 26% of the time! YIKES! They have several kids in the 40's. If we are serving well.... "Summer because I don't have to go to school, and I can go to the lake." What do you see yourself doing in five years? "Playing a sport in college." In the past year, who is the best volleyball player you have played against (proper noun not needed)? Why? "The outside hitter from Buchanan because she could hit anywhere, she hit extremely hard, and she hit Grace multiple times." Recall one of your most embarrassing memories of playing volleyball. "We were playing Delphi this year, and I passed [a freeball] the ball right into the net." You are the coach. What is something you would never make your team do that one of your coaches makes/made you do. "I wouldn't make them run a mile, only half a mile, but they are expected to make a time of course, and instead they would run more bleachers." You have been a bad girl and will be stranded on an island all alone for six months. It is a nice island with cool breezes and a warm sun all year. Nice house but there is just enough electricity one extra electrical appliance. Basic food is provided. Tell us what you are taking. "I would take my phone, peanut butter, ask for [an] internet connection, my favorite blanket, and a swim suit to go swimming of course." The fact that we play a 3A school, another 3A school who at 10-3 is having a great season, and lastly a strong 2A program that is used to being ranked and used to playing in big moments, and it begs the question, "Why worry?"
We are sitting pretty! No downside, no real pressure to the weekend for us at all. If we beat Frankfort, it is a feather in our hat. I mean they are a big school with that nice gym and a history of success. And if we don't beat them, well, they are that big school with that nice gym and a history of success. Benton Central? Personally, I have never beaten B-Central. If we beat them, wow! Great for us. If not, well has Carroll ever beaten them? Then, comes Bob's MG bullies. Their RPI, which is what I really use to judge where we stand in the state and 2A, crushes us. They are 9th. We are 26th. Heck there are teams with losing records ahead of us and around us in the RPI. Go out, play, have fun! Having said all that, if we go 2-1 or a competitive 0-3 and not lay an egg in any set like the 3rd at Delphi, we win. We can compete with the big boys (girls) and stand right in there with a team that has reasonable expectations of winning a state title. That was a huge statement win beating Wapahani last night by MG. Go out, play, have fun!! Ok, maybe there is a little pressure. We are wearing the long-sleeves at some point. I really do not like those uniforms. If we wear them instead of the nice new one, well, we better do well in them! If we win tonight, Libby Eller will have 42 varsity wins as a volleyball player at Carroll high school. Based on an assumption that a freshmen made varsity in 1990 for Coach Farris Abbott and played four years, that 1994 graduate won 42 matches. After tonight, Libby will be tied as the winningest volleyball player in Carroll history. When we beat Frankfort on Saturday, she stands alone. Libby has grown with this program. When we met, she was a freshman athlete with volleyball experience that amounted to two and a half months in 8th grade. She endured 4 wins that freshmen year surrounded by girls who cared more about their personal achievements than the team's. She returned as a sophomore, cross country would have loved her, and settled into her role as a libero. She passed 1.60. Endured a year of house cleaning as we purged the program of kids who did not buy in for one reason or another and the freshmen arrived. No JV as I pulled them all to varsity right away. Tripled our win total. She tried club. Suddenly, she was a junior. She passed 1.79. Our 14 wins tied a school record for wins. She was named All-Conference Honorable Mention. Still building as we just keep adding freshmen to varsity and watch people with personal agendas or do not want to work hard drift away. We are now a third of the way through our last year together. Libby is passing even better, 2.02 as of this morning. She talks on the court. She "raised her voice" a couple of times this year. She is "cheering loud". And, just like her winter sport and spring sport, she plays on a top ten ranked team. Really weird to consider next year without her. She is everything a coach could want in a student-athlete. She works. She is a great student. She competes. She cares for others. Man alive, we are going to miss her. How can you not love this picture? She seems to be having fun with me, the girls, herself, and the sport. This is our 3rd week in the Top Ten for 2A. Will we be there next Monday after the Frankfort Tournament? Stay tuned.
1.) Remember that we have a 5:30 start on Wednesday. 2.) Thank you to M. Herr, Mad. Miller, E. Eurit, and G. Filbrun for helping with hay. It is greatly appreciated. M. Herr, my glove still stinks like hog manure! 3.) Ace to Error ratio is a huge number to me. How me aces can you get our team without giving away points? Three of the top five servers in the state as of tonight are from Carroll Jr./Sr. High School. L. Worl, L. Eller, and E. Eurit!! That is crazy! M. Herr, Meg. Miller, and G. Filbrun rank very high with their ace counts, but they have too many errors (relative term, they are doing great) to rank highly in ace to error rankings. 4.) Spirit Wear has been ordered. 5.) Going to Purdue to watch volleyball Saturday night and eat pizza. $3 tickets. Come one - Come all. Junior High is welcome to come along.
