I finally thought I had the courage to watch the Knox match. I was wrong. I am mad. I am sad. My stomach hurts. What a bad loss. The end of the second set ranks among some of the worst play by one of my teams I can recall. We were ahead with the serve at 21-17. We lost 25-21. What happened?

This is a cut and paste of bits and pieces of a story that resonates with me. I provided a link at the bottom if you wish to see the whole story. The story is about volleyball, that is why it showed up on my radar, but it applies to much of life in general and Carroll in specific.
AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) - The head volleyball coach at Amarillo High is on paid administrative leave after announcing her resignation. [Kori] Clements claims she was not supported by athletic, campus, or district administration on decisions she made while coaching, and was told by campus administration that, "I needed to recognize the political aspect of my job, and also of theirs." She went on to say she cannot and will not compromise the integrity of her decisions based on a parent's political pressure or position. Clements said her resignation takes effect at the end of her contract. Her full statement is below: "For a variety of reasons, I have recently resigned from my position as AHS volleyball coach, effective at the end of my contract. I want to be clear, I have not violated any district or UIL standards, and have upheld the teacher code of ethics at all times. As I have contemplated this decision over the past several days, I have been overwhelmed with the outpouring of support from current and former players and parents as well as my professional peers. I am so thankful for the success we’ve experienced and the many positive relationships that have developed. As a coach, playing time decisions are always difficult. Unfortunately, upon making these decisions in the best interest of team success, I was not supported by athletic, campus, or district administration. I was told by campus administration that I needed to recognize the political aspect of my job, and also of theirs. I cannot and will not compromise the integrity of my decisions based on a parent’s political pressure or position. I believe strongly in the value of athletics, that being a part of a team is a privilege, and playing time is earned. Personally, been there. Done that. My heart goes out to this young coach. She gets an "atta boy" for all that it is worth. This is an opinion piece written by a local journalist. What you see is a word-for-word cut and paste so there is no link. We are having a good winter. Much of that is due to the Jr. High players. We have a boat load of them. It is a wonderful problem to have when we go to "touch" a ball for 15 or 20 minutes and we fill a court. Last night we had 11 kids passing a ball, running stairs, and lifting. Twelve if you include Jordo, who is still limited by her sore knees.
The high school regulars Tuesday, Thursday, and Fridays are P. Jones, A. May, J. Seward, and M. Ashby. J. Herron is a little more hit and miss due to cheerleading. M. Moore has vanished as seniors usually do. K. Hammond is in basketball. J. Ebert is in occasionally as her knee and managing basketball allows. M. Viney is in basketball and M. McMains is swimming. Among the freshmen, M. Worl is in basketball. We have three freshmen that might be finished with volleyball. E. Zinn wrote a very well thought out of letter to me and her teammates explaining why she was finished. She earned a huge "atta boy". We have not seen or heard from M. McIlrath since Awards Night. M. Ellis is taking the winter off and might return for the summer. I am comfortable with the turnout for club. Ayres, Draper, Gish, Myers, Pontigo, and Powell are playing from our incoming freshmen class, Other than freshmen we just mentioned, I anticipate that every returning upperclassmen is playing. We have seen all the freshies in the weight room. I was stunned just yesterday to see G. Ayers bicep curling the heavy bar yesterday! Wow! P. Jones had a positive experience in Minneapolis at the phenom camp. As a sophomore, she generated three contacts from college volleyball programs. She did well in her physical testing and reinforced much of my opinion based upon seeing her physiological testing. Paige was voted onto the Lafayette Journal & Courier All-Area Honorable Mention team. Technique wise, A. May is staying straighter when setting an up court ball. Too often as a freshmen, she was tilted and pushed her left hand across her right. J. Seward is improving. Her passing (a tossed ball in a controlled environment) is improving. We continue to work on her jump and swing. We have lots to be excited about on a cold day in January. I love these kids. They are working hard. We have reasons to be excited for the upcoming season. |
