As we have finished summer play, the final stats are available in the prior blog entry. There is no way to say the summer was anything other than a success. We went 26-10 in sets played; however, we had our butts kicked in six of the ten losses. That might be a preview of 2019. When we play a poor team, make a strong effort or happen to play well, we are going to win a lot and easily. When we face adversity, it may not be pretty in any way, shape, or manner. Summer highlights after the break.

The higher the number, the better. Perfect is 3.0.

Bus leaves at 7:45. Be there at 7:30. Things to pack include 3 coolers with ice. One water cooler with ice & water. Med Kit. The "extra bag". Bag of extra towels. Paper products for dinner. Thanks to the May Family and the Seward Family for lunch money. NO SPEAKER on the first day!! 9:00 CST (10:00 our time) - Colomo, Michigan on Ct. 1 9:45 Off 10:30 - Benton Central on Ct. 1 11:15 Off 12:00 - Tipton on Ct. 2 12:45 Off 1:30 - River Forest on Ct. 2 2:15 Off 3:00 - Westville on Ct. 3 3:45 Off 4:30 - Martin on Ct. 4 5:15 Finished We plan to arrive at the Holiday Inn Express by 6:15. Check the girls in, unload the bus, and pick up dinner from Villa Nova by 7:15. Sunset on Lake Michigan is at 9:13 tomorrow. That gives us an hour to eat, clean up and head to the beach. Oinks is open until 11:30, so we hit it as we head back to the hotel. As we prepare to travel north to participate in the Dunes Volleyball Club summer camp, I thought it might be wise to let the freshmen parents/players know what we are doing and post a reminder for the returning players and families. WHO: The scrimmage series is sponsored by Dunes Volleyball Club based in LaPorte, Indiana. They are a decent national level club. They offer three dates of two days each where high school teams have the opportunity to play and play and play some more. We are talking about a lot of contacts in two days. There will be 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A teams there. Indiana and Michigan make up the bulk of the competition, but we have played teams from Illinois and a couple from Ohio. We played well tonight. What makes me say that? We were close to be in the right place at the right time more often than not. That was huge. We served well. We offer a "Tip of the Cap" to M. Pontigo, K. Draper, A. May, J. Herron, J. Herron, and K. Hammond. Take away the top spin serves (something we do not teach), and the girls missed 4 serves all night. This allowed us to keep pressure on the other team all evening. Serving a JV team, you would expect our ace-to-error number to be decent. It was at 5:1 (20/4). Our freshmen and sophomore hitters, while not great were not terrible. K. Draper, D. Myers, and even our little 8th grader, Little Wags, were all within one swing of being positive. Biggest disappointment was receive. J. Seward was our only effective passer at 1.71 (12/7). And we got done early, so we had ice cream!
What a beautiful day. It was a bit rushed, but in the end, it worked. Shopping went well. Ask M. Pontigo about sweatshirts! Some fun pictures along the lake. The sand dune was easier this year due to time, but we still did over 300 yards. Had an hour to play in the waves along the beach. Hot dogs on the grill. Rushed off after dinner. Never thought that this NOT being dead week, we could have played beach volleyball on the nice courts sand courts east of Claire's place. We had Princess home six minutes late due to long, slow train in Monon. Enjoy the pictures after the "read more break".
This is mostly for freshmen and their parents.
Tomorrow is way out of our routine. Because our season starts so late, Claire (Sidorov-Zellers), a former student/player of mine, and a two time DIII National Champion in Volleyball at Washington University in St. Louis, is hosting us really early this year on Lake Michigan. She will be out of the lake house before conditioning week and the season start, which pushes us to going when she asked. Tomorrow. If you you want to see what this is all about, go to the July blogs in 2018, 17, 16, 15, 14 and so on to find pictures and notes. 1.) If you drive north on IN-67 and US-231 from Vincennes, Indiana, it is 130 miles before you find an ice cream stand in Linden, Indiana. How stupid is that? Not one to be found in Bruceville, Bicknell, Lyons, Switz City, Worthington, Spencer, or Cloverdale. The one in Greencastle does not serve food. Granted, other than Spencer and Cloverdale, those other places make Burlington look big time. Still, it boggles the mind to think of Burlington as big time.
2.) K. Hammond, thanks of thinking of me in Tennessee at the Pepper Palace. Yes, I checked out pepperpalace.com! 3.) A. May, glad you did not earn a visit to a Spanish Jail for running the ruins! We will stick to dune hills! I hope my recommendation of Rhonda was worth your time? Flamenco music in warm ups this year! What do you think? 4.) P. Jones, I trust you used sunblock and avoided a sunburn while along the Gulf of Mexico. 5.) M. Viney, J. Seward, and P. Jones, I hear of no security breaches in Washington DC. Good! Ask me about the US Capitol, a traffic cone, a camera with a 300mm lens, and how all that looks like a missile launcher on night vision cameras according to all those security guys who came jogging up in the dark. 4.) We officially start the season in 30 days. 5.) The next seven days- this Monday and Tuesday for camp. 5:30-8:30. We are on the court the whole time. Wednesday is a day off. Thursday to Michigan City and Big Claire's to run the dune hill. I am going for run in 10 minutes to see how my knee feels tomorrow. I get to see Dr. Daluga at the end of the month. Might be time to clean this up. Friday is optional as we might be pretty sore. Next Monday, the freshmen and sophomores are going to play a JV scrimmage. |
