Now, we need to practice another gear. Marissa's slow pace, a little loop, and accuracy are exactly what I preach. It allowed her to destroy a poor passing team such as Eastside with eight aces and 11 points. However, when serving a good passing team, she had one ace and two points against Wabash, Marissa needs to bear down, add some pace, be a bit tighter to the net, all while maintaining her accuracy.
2.) Speaking of serving, O. Stankard earned a Tip of the Cap. Over the course of two days, Olivia kept her serve in play. Was it aggressive? No but it was not hurting us. Her nine aces were low on the team, her .210 to zone was 2nd lowest on the team, and her 25 points scored while on serve were lowest on the team. Yet after saying all that, she only missed six serves giving her a positive ace-to-error ratio of 1.5:1. This from a young lady who has struggled to control her serve. The hope is the two days are big steps in becoming an effective server. 3.) Similar to our first two girls, R. Gleason earns a Tip of the Cap for her serve. Reagan has a nice looking serve with zero consistency. I do not think she jumps hard enough. Her contact point is too low. What we found to be effective was a short seam ball. On day 1, she had 6 aces. On day 2, she had 14. The issue we faced is when the opposing serve receive started to crowd the net. Reagan lacks a serve with pace to push people back. The defensive serve I was calling in the short seams became nice offense. We need a counter punch when people take that option away. 4.) We want our primary passers to pass 1.60 or better in receive. G. Ayres (1.64) and M. Pontigo (1.71) both achieved that goal. What we need to do is concentrate on avoiding set losing valleys. On day 1, Grace was chewed up over a 3 or 4 minute stretch of time in one segment. What should have been a 1.6 day became 1.51. Marissa is going to have to fight through a fatigue issue that we witnessed too often last season. She passed that 1.71 despite a horrible set vrs. Eastside (14/13= 1.07) and a frustrating 4 serves vrs. Wabash (3/4= 0.75) where she did not get her feet and platform to the ball. 5.) G. Ayres is the latest in a number of small hitters at Carroll that have mastered the four step approach we teach and the arm swing. She hit .133 (61-35/195) over the two days. Not bad. Not great, but not bad. If she could hit .160, it would be huge. While I was pleased with 51 kills, we need to cut down on hitting errors. For example, subtract five errors, do not even make them kills, just subtract five mistakes, and Grace hits .158 for the two days. That is right on the verge of what we need. Addition by subtraction! 6.) This and That. T. Coveris served pretty well. She was .439 to zone (39-10/66). You have to love the sequence she had to beat Kankakee Valley in the 3rd set. She served eight times, each of them to zone, with three aces. Match point was a short ball to zone three. Ace for the win! M. Pontigo with nearly 100 digs at 95. Our next two passers combined had 105. O. Stankard hit .421 (10-2/18). I know it is not a ton of swings, but only 2 errors is super. J. Duvall, A. Coomler, A. Lytle, and H. Randolph for being good sports and good support. They kept stats, cheered, and kept a smile through a couple of long days. Thank you, girls. Ayres, G. 0 BS 1 BA 0 BE totals= 1 BS 1 BA 0 BE
