A Short History
Central Indiana Volleyball Club, CIViC, was created nearly twenty years ago. The intent of the club has always been to serve as a developmental tool for volleyball players. When CIViC was first created, it was specifically to assist the players at Carroll and Lewis Cass High Schools. At the time, I was varsity coach at Carroll and my wife, Gretchen, was varsity coach at Lewis Cass. Over the years our mission expanded to include schools from Allen, Cass, Carroll, Miami, Clinton, Fulton, Grant, Howard, Huntington, Madison, Tippecanoe, Tipton, Wabash, and Whitley counties. Our role evolved to include an elite team that provided players the opportunity to play college volleyball. Our primary goal has always been dedicated to player improvement.
Why is there a need for club volleyball at Carroll?
Lets look at why Carroll volleyball has struggled to the point that it is historically one of the worst programs in the state? The bottom line is that typically the players have a poor skill base. In addition, the girls are trying to play a game that they simply do not understand at a fundamental level and often attempt to play a very athletic game with athletes that do not match up with girls on the other side of the net. At the core of the issue are poor skills. To advance a skill base, ie - get better, takes more than playing two and a half months a year. It is our feeling that even in a low stress smaller club such as CIViC, players will add over 2,500 touches on a volleyball. Girls get hundreds if not thousands of swings, sets, passes, transitions, reading hitters, and simply being around like minded girls. Go to Munciana or Indianapolis or Lafayette and that number triples as do the demands of practice and cost.
For some girls, Bailey Worl of our Varsity team for example, club has made playing Division II volleyball possible. For others, it is simply more fun to be around like minded girls and gain confidence with new and improved skills. For these girls, club might be the difference between varsity and jv or making a team and not being cut. Club might be the difference between starting, coming off the bench, playing all the way around, or filling a specific need. Clearly club is not an end all - be all, but simply another tool for those who wish to to improve.
This coming season, CIViC will once again have club teams available for elementary age, junior high, and high school age players. For more details, we encourage you to activate the link above and visit the website for Central Indiana Volleyball Club. Thanks for your interest. Coach - D. Crum
